Gotta Slow It Down Baby

I'm sorry to have to say this but I actually like the Spice Girls.

I'm not a fan of all their songs. But when Spice World came out, I bought the album on cassette. My film "It's Not Easy Being Greek" was playing at the Montreal World Film Festival in 1998, and my girlfriend (at the time) and I listened to that album at least a dozen times both ways. Ever since then, I've been a fan. I have three of their songs (as mp3s) in my play-list at work to this day. And I don't really give a shit who knows it. Why? Read on...

Sure people have made fun of them in the past about how annoying they are. Before Live8, Sir Bob Geldof supposedly threatened the members of Pink Floyd with the possibility of bringing the Spice Girls back together, unless they got back together for his benefit show. They did in the end over the fact that “The world didn’t need the Spice Girls to get back together”.

I knew right off the bat that they were going to be huge once I saw "Wannabe" on Much for the first time. I was in film school at the time and I told everyone to watch out for them. I had a huge crush on Scary, and eventually, all of them.

When "Say You'll Be There" was playing on every radio station, “Girl Power” was finally kicking in. The movie that they made wasn't terrific, (an obvious Beatles' Hard Day's Night homage/rip-off/update). But it was entertaining (in parts). And like I said, I even got the cassette tape of Spice World, and had it in my car for years to follow. It was a secret I hadn't shared with anyone before. But looking back at it? Was it really that bad? I mean there have been so many “copy cats” that followed. I think The Pussy Cat Dolls (irony not included) came closest, but I only know one of their songs and hate it.

The whole point of Spice Girls music was about "the pop song". Forget the best friends bullshit, or the so-called "Girl Power" movement, or the cute names. They tried every style and were totally original. They also had some great producers who knew how to make a great love song (2 Become 1), Latin dance song (Spice Up Your Life), Pop songs about friends and lovers (Wannabe, Say You'll Be There), the Motown hit (Stop), and the Swan song (Viva Forever) that wasn’t really the last song they did, just the last good song they released. They even sold out with a song for Pepsi that wasn't as bad as Van Halen's "Right Now" (Move Over (Generation Next)).

What the hell am I getting at? Well today I was watching some taped episodes of AOTS, and they presented a video that really pissed me off. I present it to you via YouTube embedding below. Don't let the first shot of the sun fool you. There is no enlightenment in the next 3 minutes and 17 seconds of your life (once you actually hit the play button, I mean). You may even feel dumber after watching it.

I think the best comment I read on YouTube about this video is as follows:
"When they say "no way no way", it refers to anyone intelligent considering buying their record." -aliensporebomb (1 month ago)

Long live the Spice Girls. I miss you all so much. Call me.

I never thought the day would come where someone would trump david hasselhoff, but clearly the "no way, no way" girls have trumped him tenfold. Wow! They shall be on my "next to die" list.

I can't tollerate a single second with those spice racks so i'm the wrong girl to try and convince.

Your guilty pleasures amuse me, however.

I am more apt to relate if the spice racks have served a
substantial role for your masturbatory sessions, otherwise... you have scared me.

These “Vanilla” whores have actually caused my penis to shrink back into my stomach, the opposite effect of when I first saw any of the spice racks.

OMG, I think my IQ dropped at least 10 points just in the first 30 seconds. I couldn't bring myself to follow them through with the whole vid. PeeYoooooook! Quick! I need fish, or some other brain food.

What's up with the whole Sesame Street song? Are they trying to attract pedophiles? That's just - uh - *shudder*

The Spicys, on the other hand, I can deal with. I found it annoying back when everything was Spice This and Spice That, but I'm like that with pretty much everything that goes over the top in PR (like Titanic.) We actually have one of their albums, I think. GuTTer MuNKi bought it for a song he liked. I'm sure it was in the days before single song downloads, so, yeah, it must be kicking around here somewhere. I think they're a guilty pleasure for him, too. At least that song. :)

I hope your penis comes out of hiding. Maybe some back to back Spice Girls. Not necessarily just the vids. . . ^_^

Haha. I think the original song was from The Muppet Show.

Which song did GuTTer MuNKi like and which album did you mean?

Did you know if you typed in "GuTTer MuNKi" in the Firefox address bar, it redirects to you site?
