Vancouver and it's rainy weather.

I love the rain. Tonight more than ever I've realized that. I hate the snow we get in this country. And we've been so lucky that we haven't really had any snow stick this winter (in Toronto). About the only good thing I can think of about Vancouver is the rain. Maybe Stanley Park. Oh and the mountains.

This post is going to be about all the stereotypes I’ve heard from other people about Vancouver over the years. As much as I hate stereotypes, I kind of believe some of these things...

Downtown Vancouver is small. Well compared to Toronto, it's small. The two times I've been there, I've walked across the downtown core within 15-30 minute time period. I do walk pretty fast when I'm by myself. But Jesus, that's not very big. Again, that makes no difference...until you take into account...that...

Vancouver has a really bad homeless area. I can walk into any bad neighbourhood in Toronto, during the day, and not worry about getting jumped. But some parts in Vancouver...? You can't even drive through certain areas without the possibility of getting car jacked. Okay, I don't know if that's true. But it's what I want to believe. Plus there’s no subway. I can’t imagine living in a place with no subway. Where else are the homeless supposed to sleep?

Vancouver is filled with a bunch of hippies and dope heads. This is probably not true. But Toronto isn’t any better. Not that I have anything against drugs. I personally don't need them to have a good time. I want more people, especially in the arts community, to take more drugs. They’ll make better movies that way. Kevin Smith, who coincidently went to Vancouver Film School for a year, made a sequel to Clerks that blew monkey balls. I hate it when people's movies blow monkey balls.

Vancouver is an hour away from the U.S. So is Toronto if you think about it. But Buffalo is less obnoxious than Seatle. And there's also Niagara Falls to consider. Oh wait.

I've lived in Toronto all my life. I can't imagine ever leaving it. Because it is, to me, the best city in the world to live in, hands down. Sure it’s gotten worse with the violence, but if you’re white like me, it’s still better compared to other places with white people.

But I will leave it one day. I would one day for you.

Also Star Wars was released on May 25, 1977. Check Wikipedia. Not June 24th, 1977.

Hmmmmm… where should I start with this reply.
Bring forth the bullets!

· First of all… let me just say that Toronto has stolen our rain and left us with this http://becauseofghosts.livejournal.com/53507.html#cutid1 SNOW MF! SNOW!
· Downtown Vancouver is small…but like most cities the heart and sole is not entirely in the downtown area. Most of the action is in the East.. a lot of the lounging and coffee drinkin’ is in Kits, you can go chill out in the cove, eat some great food on commercial, you can have a drink on the beach. Downtown is for the money makin’ but it is not the be all end all of a city. (disclaimer: not recommended to live in Burnaby, Richmond, Surry, etc)
· Vancovuer does have a really bad homeless area. This is very true and when I first moved here I was terrified. Then I realized that they were more interested in scoring junk than bothering me. I’ve stumbled drunk through some of the crackiest of crack areas without dying. Pretty much East Hastings is the street to avoid (though sadly some great bars are there…hahah, silly kids and their ghetto sylin’)
· We do have a subway…it is called the skytrain. It is not really sub-way though more above-way as it kinda goes above the city like a monorail (did somebody say monorail?)
· We ship all the hippies to the island. Those who choose not to go we move to ‘the drive’. Two hippier than hippy experiences include seeing a guy dancing around a circle sprinkling glitter from his pouch around his neck in the air and when I went to stereolab the hippies were there dancing in a circle with actual flowers in their hair. Other than that it is just me on my couch smoking a big j.
· Seattle is aces.
This comment must have been longer than your post. I will shut up now.

Thanks for writing all that Diana! You didn't have to defend Vancouver. I love that city like a fat kid loves cake. I'm just up in the air about something else.

I've decided that I'm not going now. I took a walk around High Park today (on my day off) while going to visit my mom in the hospital. And I realised I'd much rather be around the people and places that I love, then start all over in another part of the country chasing pipe dreams. I can do the same thing here in this city and for less money. That's another thing I forgot to mention about Vancouver. How expensive everything is.

oh good gawd, you don't have to defend that to me. hahah, i moved here on a whim and have been struggling through this decision for the past year. it is very hard to be away from family and friends but in a way it helped me to grow up, which is something i despirately needed i suppose.

and yes, i lived on boiled beans for 2 months straight and currently work 2 jobs so i can get by so i do have to agree with you that this city is bluddy expensive.

when my brother came to visit he looked at me very earnestly and was like 'dude, i could never live here... did you see the price of cheese?'

i'm glad that high park helped to clear out your head. i grew up in that neighbourhood and there is a place in the trees with one rusty swing and a pond that i declared my thinking spot as a kid. good luck in all decisions. btw, i'm very bored at work.
